Whatever happened to our system?

(This is definitely a theme I’ll come back to later on in life.)

  • Sometimes we see bad things and dismiss it easily. But when God gives us mercy, we are pointed to the very kink in our armor that would otherwise destroy us, to our very salvation.
In this case, some days ago my mother and I had a chance to talk with one of our councilmen for the city I live in California. We were going to meet the guy and give him some statistics on a Daytime Curfew he was wanting to propose soon. At first he was very excited about the whole thing. But then he called her and said that since he was going to propose it next month, he ought to gather all the “evidence” and not listen to biased opinions on the Curfew proposal. As if it wasn’t bad enough, he claimed that the community was not supposed to be involved anyways!

What!?! Not be involved in a ordinance that affects people who can’t even vote? Even more insulting was this idea that he could make perfect and informed decisions by getting info from the “proper channels”! Perhaps the man simply wasn’t aware that he was snubbing the first citizen (and a woman too) in California to ever successfully stop an ordinance of this magnitude, or he was just an idiot.

Either way, this man’s arrogant ideology that he knows best is one that the US Congress has been adopting quite a bit lately.
Just take the recent healthcare bill. It was wrong to push a bill through which nobody read and evil to do it against the people’s will. Although one might think one has been sent by God Himself, one should still remain in the very boundaries that the Creator has made.
Are people just sheep, that they can’t have a say in things which alter their livelihood? Why else do they call them a public servant if not to serve those who they represent? Here I am, a voter who voted for this man, only to be disgraced by his abhorrent behavior!

The source of this problem is really corruption by power. Each leader is given authority to make new laws and enforce them. Yet in his or her duty, it is very easy to fall in the trap of thinking you are knowledgeable. This being in the know, coupled with power above other people, make for a wicked couple when combined by the fact that all men are inherently evil and self-centered and prone to serve themselves and their egos above the rest.
So for those who do not have this veil hovering over their heads, it is our duty to ourselves and the next generation to remind those in power who they really serve.

This audacity to snub your own constituents is sadly not unique. Yet the response by us must be quick and decisive lest we encourage politicians to seize our rights in the name of safety. So get involved a little and at least attempt to know who your leaders and representatives are. Because God holds us accountable for our possessions and stewardships.
